Brooklyn's Sunflower Bean is All Their Own
Making the jump from kids creating noise to a band coming into their own is rare. Whether it’s the fact they intentionally deviate from the current music trends, or their hybrid sound that seemingly stitches together the best parts of iconic music from the past, for Brooklyn’s own Sunflower Bean, it wasn’t really a question of if, it was a matter of when. Drummer Jacob Faber explains: “My first memory of wanting to be in a band was when I was like five or six, I was completely obsessed with the album Tommy by The Who. That record was just really inspiring to me. That’s when I thought it was possible.”
From their tour van breaking down in the-middle-of-nowhere, Arizona and having their best show yet at the Bowery Ballroom to their upcoming tour in China, they are learning what the fast lane feels like. “It feels like we’re a family on the run, or like a family on family vacation forever,” says singer and bassist Julia Cumming.

Bringing a unique breed of we’re-doing-our-own-thing combined with rifts reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and Neu, they’ve been catching some serious buzz at events like SXSW and getting love and praise from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.
Sunflower Bean’s original approach stems from seeing everyone else chasing the newest sound, and refusing to follow suit. “We were seeing all the trends of what everyone was doing, and kind of intentionally did a lot of things that we felt were opposite,” guitarist Nick Kivlen notes.
We spent some time with them in Los Angeles while on the last leg of their latest tour, checking the sites at China Town and catching their killer set at the Constellation Room. Trust us, you’ll want to keep your eye on them. Check the video to hear their story on how they got here and about their debut album Human Ceremony.
